Global Innovation Index 2013: Croatia Climbs Five Places

According to the latest Global Innovation Index, which measures countries’ innovation capabilities and outputs, Croatia climbed five places compared to 2012 and is now positioned at the 37th place. Among European countries, Croatia takes the 26th place, one place higher than in 2012.

The 2013 report covers 142 countries that account for 95 percent of world’s population.

The Eastern European countries ranked higher than Croatia are Slovakia (36), Latvia (33), Hungary (31), Slovenia (30), Czech Republic (28) and Estonia (25).

The Eastern European countries ranked lower than Croatia are Lithuania (40), Bulgaria (41), Montenegro (44), Moldova (45), Romania (48), Poland (49), Macedonia (51), Serbia (54), Russia (62), Bosnia (65), Ukraine (71), Georgia (73), Belarus (77), Kazakhstan (84), Albania (93), Tajikistan (101), Azerbaijan (105), Kyrgyzstan (117) and Uzbekistan (133).

Croatia is best ranked in the categories of knowledge and technology outputs and infrastructure, while its weakest category is market sophistication, which includes the areas of credit, investment, trade and competition.

On a similar note, Croatian inventors won 20 awards for their innovations during the International Invention Show & Technomart (INST) 2013, an annual exhibition of international inventions and technologies, held in Taipei, Taiwan last month.
